It brings together a range of disciplinary insights on the question of what might be new about the carbon economy in terms of the way it is constituted, the practices of governance it has generated and the effects it has given rise to in social, political and ecological terms. [208 Seiten, Softcover]

mehr...

Fractal Geography

Our daily universe is rough and infinitely diverse. The fractal approach clarifies and orders these disparities. It helps us to envisage new explanations of geographical phenomena, which are, however, considered as definitely understood.
Written for use by geographers and researchers from similar disciplines, such as ecologists, economists, historians and sociologists, this book presents the algorithms best adapted to the phenomena encountered, and proposes case studies illustrating their applications in concrete situations.
An appendix is also provided that develops programs written in Mathematica. [Hardcover]

mehr...

Geographic Information Science (GISc&T) has been at the forefront of education innovation in geography and allied sciences for two decades. Teaching Geographic Information Science and Technology in Higher Education is an invaluable reference for educators and researchers working in GISc and Technology providing coverage of the latest innovations in the field and discussion of what the future holds for GI Science education in the years to come.

Stemming initially from the challenges and opportunities of integrating advanced GISc&T technologies into existing college and university programs, GISc&T scientists were soon leading the way in the development of web-based instructional materials, distance education, professional training and certification. This book clearly documents these innovations and takes stock of lessons learned. The content will be of interest to both educators and researchers working in GISc&T as well as educators in other disciplines. More importantly, this book also anticipates some of the opportunities and challenges in GISc&T education in the next decade. As such it will be of interest to chairs, deans, administrators, faculty in other subfields, and educators in general.

The book is edited by arguably the top people in the field who bring a wealth of experience through their own teaching and research in the subject. There is simply no other book on the market and as a result of the Editors standing in the field, they are able to invite contributions from a broad range of academics in a range of institutional settings from an international perspective at all levels of higher education. [496 Seiten, Hardcover]

mehr...

Food

Food is one of the most basic resources that humans need for daily survival. Forty percent of the world's population gains a livelihood from agriculture and we all consume food. Yet control over this fundamental resource is concentrated in relatively few hands. The 2008 food price crisis illustrated both the volatility and vulnerability built into the current global food system; at the height of the crisis, the number of hungry people on the planet climbed to over 1 billion. At the same time, there are serious ecological consequences that stem from an increasingly industrial model of agriculture that has spread worldwide.

This book aims to contribute to a fuller understanding of the forces that influence and shape the current global food system. Author Jennifer Clapp explores how corporate control, inequitable international agricultural trade rules, and the financialization of farm commodities have each had a fundamental influence on the practices that dominate today's global food system. By contrast, farmers and consumers, particularly in the developing world, have had little voice to change the rules of the game. But movements are emerging to challenge the dominant global system. The extent to which these alternative movements can displace it, however, remains to be seen. [200 Seiten, Softcover]

mehr...

Environmental Hazards and Disasters

Environmental Hazards and Disasters: Contexts, Perspectives and Management focuses on manifested threats to humans and their welfare as a result of natural disasters. The book uses an integrative approach to address socio-cultural, political and physical components of the disaster process. Human and social vulnerability as well as risk to environmental hazards are explored within the comprehensive context of diverse natural hazards and disasters.
In addition to scientific explanations of disastrous occurrences, people and governments of hazard-prone countries often have their own interpretations for why natural disasters occur. In such interpretations they often either blame others, in order to conceal their inability to protect themselves, or they blame themselves, attributing the events to either real or imagined misdeeds. The book contains a chapter devoted to the neglected topic of such reactions and explanations. Includes chapters on key topics such as the application of GIS in hazard studies; resiliency; disasters and poverty; climate change and sustainability and development.

This book is designed as a primary text for an interdisciplinary course on hazards for upper-level undergraduate and Graduate students. Although not targeted for an introductory hazards course, students in such a course may find it very useful as well. Additionally, emergency managers, planners, and both public and private organizations involved in disaster response, and mitigation could benefit from this book along with hazard researchers. It not only includes traditional and popular hazard topics (e.g., disaster cycles, disaster relief, and risk and vulnerability), it also includes neglected topics, such as the positive impacts of disasters, disaster myths and different accounts of disasters, and disasters and gender. [334 Seiten, Hardcover]

mehr...

The book places particular emphasis on the broader environmental science and sustainability issues that are of increasing concern to all cold regions if present global climate trends continue. Clearly structured throughout, the book focuses on those elements of Canada's cold environments that will be most affected by global climate change - namely, the tundra, sub-arctic and boreal forest regions of northern Canada, and the high mid-latitude mountains of western Canada. The book considers the implications this will have for similar environments around the world. [340 Seiten, Softcover]

mehr...

* Presents a distinct approach to conceptualising the city through the lens of urban learning
* Integrates fieldwork conducted in Mumbai's informal settlements with debates on urban policy, political economy, and development
* Considers how knowledge and learning are conceived and created in cities
* Addresses the way knowledge travels and opportunities for learning about urbanism between North and South [230 Seiten, Hardcover]

mehr...

The author combines the result of his fieldwork conducted in Mumbai and other regions with a synthesis of current theoretical research on knowledge, space, and materiality to show how learning should be viewed as central to the production and politics of cities. In doing so, he deploys the analytic of assemblage to explain the processes through which knowledge and learning enable and limit various forms of urbanism. Provocative and timely, this book offers invaluable insights into the role of learning in urban developmental studies. [232 Seiten, Softcover]

mehr...

It is a comprehensive and coherent edited compendium of key writing about the nature of mapping practices from the last hundred years. The editorial selection of fifty classic and thought provoking texts demonstrates how cartography works as a powerful representational form and also explores how different mapping practices have been conceptualised. Themes covered include paradigms, politics, people, aesthetics and technology. Excerpts are drawn from leading scholars and researchers in a range of cognate fields, including, cartography, architecture, art, media theory and graphic design. The editors provide original thematic essays that set the literature into intellectual context. The Map Reader is also illustrated with colour plates of significant maps and the all readings are helpfully integrated with a unified bibliography and comprehensive keyword and author index.

The Map Reader will bring together in a single authoritative source classic and hard to find articles relating to mapping, and introduce the changing significance of the field by situating these pieces with carefully crafted interpretative essay from the editors. [504 Seiten, Hardcover]

mehr...

Visualizing Physical Geography

As students explore the critical topics of physical geography, their study of the climate, surface features, and habitats around the world uses basic concepts of ecology, geology, chemistry, environmental science, biology, and physics and many other disciplines. Visualizing Physical Geography reinforces these interacting components and, with its premier art program (in partnership with National Geographic), vividly illustrates the interconnectedness of physical processes that weave together to create our planet's dynamic surface and atmosphere.

Visualizing Geography relies heavily on the integration of National Geographic and other visuals with text to elucidate concepts for students and solidify their understanding of them. The goal is to help students understand the world around them and interpret what they see in a meaningful, accurate and exciting way. The content, design and layout of the text takes advantage of the full capacity in which students process information - visual as well as verbal.

Visualizing Geography also helps students examine their own personal studying and learning styles with several new pedagogical aids -- encouraging students to apply what they are learning to their everyday lives. Visualizing Geography continues to offer ongoing study tips and psychological techniques for mastering the material. Most importantly students are provided with numerous opportunities to immediately access their understanding.

It is used routinely in the assessment and mapping of biodiversity over large areas, in the monitoring of changes to the physical environment, in assessing threats to various components of natural systems, and in the identification of priority areas for conservation.

This book presents the fundamentals of remote sensing technology, but rather than containing lengthy explanations of sensor specifications and operation, it concentrates instead on the application of the technology to key environmental systems. Each system forms the basis of a separate chapter, and each is illustrated by real world case studies and examples.

Readership

The book is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in earth science, environmental science, or physical geography taking a course in environmental remote sensing. It will also be an invaluable reference for environmental scientists and managers who require an overview of the use of remote sensing in monitoring and mapping environmental change at regional and global scales. [384 Seiten, Softcover]

mehr...

The main rationale for the text is to demystify the mathematical component of statistics and to present these techniques in a digestible fashion. This will be achieved through case studies that illustrate the workings of each technique, through photographs and diagrams that help students visualise some of the processes involved and through a clear explanation of how statistical software packages work. [440 Seiten, Softcover]

mehr...
