A History of Old English Literature

This introduction responds to the renewed historicism in medieval studies, focusing on the production and reception of Old English texts, and on their relation to Anglo-Saxon history and culture. It covers a wide range of genres, from riddles and cryptograms to allegory, liturgical texts, and romance, without neglecting such mainstays of Old English studies as lyric poetry and heroic legend. Into this coverage it also integrates discussion of Anglo-Latin texts which are crucial to understanding the development of Old English literature. This new edition incorporates extensive reference to scholarship of the past decade and adds new chapters on Anglo-Saxon manuscripts and incidental and marginal texts, while expanding coverage in the remaining chapters. It concludes with a retrospective outline of the reception of Anglo-Saxon literature and culture in subsequent periods. [504 Seiten, Hardcover]

mehr...

Joining the Resistance

Since the publication of her landmark book In a Different Voice, Carol Gilligan has transformed the way we think about women and men and the relations between them. It was 'the little book that started a revolution', and with more than 800,000 copies in print it has become one of the most widely read and influential books ever written on gender and human development.

In her new book Joining the Resistance Carol Gilligan reflects on the evolution of her thinking and shows how her key ideas were interwoven with her own life experiences. Her work began with the question of voice: who is speaking to whom, in what body, telling what stories about which relationships? By listening carefully she heard a voice that had been held in silence, and in the process realized the extent to which we - both women and men - had been telling false stories about ourselves.

In her subsequent work Gilligan found that adolescent girls resisted pressures to disengage themselves from their honest voices, and by joining their resistance she opened the way for the development of a more humane way of thinking about personal and political relationships. For the central conviction of her work today - and the central thesis of this book - is that the requisites for love and the requisites for citizenship in a democratic society are one and the same. Both voice and the desire to live in relationships inherent in our human nature, together with the capacity to resist false authority.

Combining autobiographical reflection with an analysis of key questions about gender and human development, this timely and highly readable book by one of America's greatest contemporary thinkers will appeal to a wide readership. [180 Seiten, Softcover]

mehr...

Double Oblivion of the Ourang-Outang

In 2009, the writer-narrator finds a Box. Within it lie the pages of her very first manuscript, pages she thought she had long since thrown away. Le Prénom de Dieu was the text that marked the start of her prodigious career, and yet for the narrator it is also the Nameless Book, the-Book-that-could-never-be-read, the book written by someone other than her. Now, once again, it heralds a beginning, as its discovery is the start of a journey into the past.

The title, with its reference to the murderous Ourang-Outang of Edgar Allan Poe's The Murders in the Rue Morgue, sets the scene: this is a detective story haunted by literary ghosts. At the very heart of literature lies the fascination with the enigma, the search for something that has been lost. Cixous illustrates this as she leads her reader on a hunt for the ultimate hidden treasure, in the company of an array of venerable predecessors from Saint-Simon, Proust and Stendhal to Shackleton, Poe and Jacques Derrida.

Double Oblivion of the Ourang-Outang is a text about literature. It speaks of the books you read and the books you write, those you remember and those you forget, those you fear and those you revere. It is also a powerful, evocative tale of beginnings and endings, of remembering and forgetting, of things and their doubles.

In a densely woven narrative, Cixous's latest text focuses on the extraordinary voyage that is literary creation, and in doing so also explores the themes of memory, loss and subjectivity. [208 Seiten, Softcover]

mehr...

[208 Seiten, Hardcover]

mehr...

Hermeneutics

Paul Ricoeur's contribution to the theory of interpretation, or hermeneutics, is considerable: he ranks among the masters of this discipline alongside Schleiermacher, Dilthey, Heidegger and Gadamer. In addition to major works like The Conflict of Interpretations, he wrote many articles and shorter texts which deserve to be discovered and rediscovered. These allow us to gain a deeper understanding of the development of his work over time and to appreciate the full range of his contribution. Some of the texts examine the nature of metaphor while others guide the reader through the many challenges of the hermeneutic problem - from the symbol to the text, then to the text as action, taking full account of the ethical implications. Here one encounters Ricoeur's reflections on the future of hermeneutics and his abiding concern to explore the relations between hermeneutics and analytical philosophy.

Ricoeur's contribution to biblical hermeneutics has also been decisive. Two masterful studies in this volume attest to Ricoeur's attempt to explore the relations between revelation and truth, on the one hand, and between myths of salvation and reason, on the other.

This book - the second volume of Ricoeur's writings and lectures - brings together texts which appeared between 1972 and 2006. It is published under the auspices of Le Fonds Ricoeur. [240 Seiten, Softcover]

mehr...

* Explores the influence and history of this important New Testament book
* Demonstrates the crucial role that Galatians has played in the development of very diverse forms of Christian spirituality
* Considers the influence of Galatians on a wide range of theological figures, including Chrysostom, Augustine, and Luther
* Examines the ways in which Galatians has influenced images of Paul, suggesting that it is the indeterminacy and complexity of his text that cause it to be interpreted in such widely differing ways
* Focuses on verses, themes or arguments that have been the subject of particularly influential readings
* Published in the innovative and stimulating Wiley-Blackwell Bible Commentaries reception history series, which focuses on the broad spectrum of interpretations rather than the traditional verse by verse analysis typically found in commentaries. [352 Seiten, Softcover]

mehr...

In lively and unflinching prose, the authors argue that contemporary thought about the world is disabled by a fatal flaw: the inability to think an after to globalization. Examining the work of four popular thinkers (Thomas Friedman, Richard Florida, Paul Krugman and Naomi Klein) After Globalization re-animates a discussion and debate about globalization which seems to have been shelved since the recent financial crisis. [256 Seiten, Softcover]

mehr...

Cardenio between Cervantes and Shakespeare

How should we read a text that does not exist, or present a play the manuscript of which is lost and the identity of whose author cannot be established for certain?

Such is the enigma posed by Cardenio - a play performed in England for the first time in 1612 or 1613 and attributed forty years later to Shakespeare (and Fletcher). Its plot is that of a 'novella' inserted into Don Quixote, a work that circulated throughout the major countries of Europe, where it was translated and adapted for the theatre. In England, Cervantes' novel was known and cited even before it was translated in 1612 and had inspired Cardenio.

But there is more at stake in this enigma. This was a time when, thanks mainly to the invention of the printing press, there was a proliferation of discourses. There was often a reaction when it was feared that this proliferation would become excessive, and many writings were weeded out. Not all were destined to survive, in particular plays for the theatre, which, in many cases, were never published. This genre, situated at the bottom of the literary hierarchy, was well suited to the existence of ephemeral works. However, if an author became famous, the desire for an archive of his works prompted the invention of textual relics, the restoration of remainders ruined by the passing of time or, in order to fill in the gaps, in some cases, even the fabrication of forgeries. Such was the fate of Cardenio in the eighteenth century.

Retracing the history of this play therefore leads one to wonder about the status, in the past, of works today judged to be canonical. In this book the reader will rediscover the malleability of texts, transformed as they were by translations and adaptations, their migrations from one genre to another, and their changing meanings constructed by their various publics. Thanks to Roger Chartier's forensic skills, fresh light is cast upon the mystery of a play lacking a text but not an author. [256 Seiten, Softcover]

mehr...

Author Linda Wagner-Martin - a highly acclaimed authority on all facets of modern American Literature - covers major works of drama, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, memoirs, and popular genres such as science fiction and detective novels. Viewing works produced during this fertile literary period from a wide-ranging perspective, Wagner-Martin considers literature in relation to such issues as the politics of Civil Rights, feminism, sexual preferences, and race and gender-based marketing. [410 Seiten, Hardcover]

mehr...

Derrida

We are plunged into the different worlds in which Derrida lived and worked: pre-independence Algeria, the microcosm of the École Normale Supérieure, the cluster of structuralist thinkers, and the turbulent events of 1968 and after. We meet the remarkable series of leading writers and philosophers with whom Derrida struck up a friendship: Louis Althusser, Emmanuel Levinas, Jean Genet, and Hélène Cixous, among others. We also witness an equally long series of often brutal polemics fought over crucial issues with thinkers such as Michel Foucault, Jacques Lacan, John R. Searle, and Jürgen Habermas, as well as several controversies that went far beyond academia, the best known of which concerned Heidegger and Paul de Man. We follow a series of courageous political commitments in support of Nelson Mandela, illegal immigrants, and gay marriage. And we watch as a concept - deconstruction - takes wing and exerts an extraordinary influence way beyond the philosophical world, on literary studies, architecture, law, theology, feminism, queer theory, and postcolonial studies.

In writing this compelling and authoritative biography, Benoît Peeters talked to over a hundred individuals who knew and worked with Derrida. He is also the first person to make use of the huge personal archive built up by Derrida throughout his life and of his extensive correspondence. Peeters' book gives us a new and deeper understanding of the man who will perhaps be seen as the major philosopher of the second half of the twentieth century. [700 Seiten, Hardcover]

mehr...

This revised and expanded anthology brings together texts from the colonial era to the twentieth century including recently discovered material, canonical literary contributions from Poe and Wharton among many others, and literature from sub-genres such as feminist and 'wilderness' Gothic. It features strong representation of female Gothic, wilderness Gothic, the Gothic of race, and the legacy of Salem witchcraft, and is edited by a founding member of the International Gothic Association. [550 Seiten, Softcover]

mehr...

Plato's Republic

Plato's Republic is one of the most well-known and widely discussed texts in the history of philosophy, but how might we get to the heart of this work today, 2500 years after it was originally composed? Alain Badiou invents a new genre in order to breathe fresh life into Plato's text and restore its universality. Rather than producing yet another critical commentary, he has retranslated the work from the original Greek and, by making various changes, adapted it for our times.

In this innovative reimagining of a classic text, Badiou has removed all references specific to ancient Greek society, from the endless exchanges about the moral courage of poets to those political considerations that were only of interest to the aristocratic elite. On the other hand, Badiou has expanded the range of cultural references: here philosophy is firing on all cylinders, and Socrates and his companions are joined by Beckett, Pessoa, Freud and Hegel. They demonstrate the enduring nature of true philosophy, always ready to move with the times.

Moreover, Badiou the dramatist has made the Socratic dialogue a true oratorial contest: in his version of the Republic, the interlocutors have more in mind than merely agreeing with the Master. They stand up to him, put him on the spot and thereby show thought in motion. Through this work of writing, scholarship and philosophy, we are able, for the first time, to read a version of Plato's text which is alive, stimulating and directly relevant to our world today. [320 Seiten, Hardcover]

mehr...

A Companion to Thomas Hardy

A Companion to Thomas Hardy brings together new essays on all aspects of Thomas Hardy's work by thirty of the world's most distinguished Hardy scholars. Groundbreaking insights are revealed through examinations of his novels, short stories, poetry, and the often neglected epic-drama, The Dynasts, that Hardy, like many of his contemporaries, considered to be his major achievement. The Companion provides an influential re-assessment of Hardy's place in both Victorian and Modern literature, with essays that consider his complexity as a biographical subject, probe his ideas and attitudes in relation to their socio-cultural, scientific, and philosophical contexts, analyze his distinctive achievements in the remarkable variety of genres in which he worked, and assess his legacy for subsequent modernist writers.
Comprehensive and authoritative, A Companion to Thomas Hardy offers an unparalleled range of contemporary scholarship on an author whose transitional position between the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-centuries makes him central to the study of both. This Companion provides a seamless overview of the entirety of Hardy's oeuvre, through historical contextualization and analysis of key works. [504 Seiten, Softcover]

mehr...

Frédéric-Yves Jeannet asks Hélène Cixous in this fascinating book of interviews. [I]t's only in writing, on paper, ... that I reach the most unknown, the strangest, the most advanced part of me for me. I feel closer to my own mystery in the aura of writing it, Cixous responds.

These conversations, which took place over three years and cover the creative process behind Cixous's fictional writing, illuminate the genesis and particular genius of one of France's most original writers. Cixous muses on her coming to writing, from her first publications to her recent acclaim for a series of fictional texts that spring, as, she insists all true writing does, from her life: the loss of her father when she was a child, and her relationship with her mother, now in her tenth decade, as well as with such friends as Jacques Derrida and Jacques Lacan. The conversations delve into Cixous's career as an academic in Paris and abroad, her summer retreats to the Bordeaux region to write uninterrupted for two months, her work with Ariane Mnouchkine's Théàtre du Soleil, her political engagements and her dreams. Readers and writers who have followed Cixous's path-blazing career as a fiction writer who crosses boundaries of genre and gender while posing essential questions about the nature of narrative and life will find this a book that cannot be put down. [224 Seiten, Softcover]

mehr...

It moves with ease between a general overview of the genre and useful theoretical approaches, and includes a close analysis of the key texts in the crime fiction tradition.
