The aim of this handbook is to offer for the first time a description of free radicals within an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary context, connecting structural characteristics and chemical properties to their applications in different areas of chemistry and related disciplines.

The Handbook covers not only basic concepts and chemical synthesis, but also touches on various aspects concerning the role of free radicals in materials and life sciences. The reader will find a balanced contribution of topics related to free radicals covering for example, their role in proteomics, genomics and lipidomics as well as their enormous potential in synthesis and technology.

The Handbook will be interesting for anybody working in the field of free radicals in the broadest sense. It will address scientists who want to enter the interdisciplinary field of free radicals. In particular, it is aimed primarily at chemists and life science researchers who want to gain a wider and deeper understanding of free radicals which will allow them to apply free radicals in their own scientific field. [2324 Pages, Hardcover]

Raman Spectroscopy and its Application in Nanostructures

Raman Spectroscopy and its Application in Nanostructures is an original and timely contribution to a very active area of physics and materials science research. This book presents the theoretical and experimental phenomena of Raman spectroscopy, with specialized discussions on the physical fundamentals, new developments and main features in low-dimensional systems of Raman spectroscopy.

In recent years physicists, materials scientists and chemists have devoted increasing attention to low-dimensional systems and as Raman spectroscopy can be used to study and analyse such materials as carbon nanotubes, quantum wells, silicon nanowires, etc., it is fast becoming one of the most powerful and sensitive experimental techniques to characterize the qualities of such nanostructures.

Recent scientific and technological developments have resulted in the applications of Raman spectroscopy to expand. These developments are vital in providing information for a very broad field of applications: for example in microelectronics, biology, forensics and archaeology. Thus, this book not only introduces these important new branches of Raman spectroscopy from both a theoretical and practical view point, but the resulting effects are fully explored and relevant representative models of Raman spectra are described in-depth with the inclusion of theoretical calculations, when appropriate. [500 Pages, Hardcover]

A Guide to the Economic Removal of Metals from Aqueous Solutions

Water pollution is topic of immense and common concern throughout the world. With a rapidly escalating global population and increased industrial development in a growing number of countries, the world's freshwater resources have become stressed. One way to get more out of less is 'treatment and reuse'.

Nickel and chromium are toxic metals and they are used extensively in numerous industries such as textiles, beverages, steel, pulp and paper, and electroplating. Their industrial effluent contains large measures of non-biodegradable traces that are harmful to flora, fauna, and human beings. Although there are a number of methodologies used for treatment of metal-containing industrial effluents and waste water, there is not one up to now that offers a high capacity removal rate at an economical cost.

.
This book presents the results and data from research and adsorption experiments carried out on the removal of nickel and chromium (as well as other metals) from aqueous solutions using modified silica sand. The data resulting from detailed kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamic studies, show that the removal capacity is increased so the treated water has a higher quality or purity. It also demonstrates that the extraction of metals is achieved at a significant lower cost because the treated water adsorption is a simple process with less maintenance, and because silica is a nontoxic natural material widely available in all parts of the world. [116 Pages, Hardcover]

X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

This book introduces readers interested in the field of X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) to the practical concepts in this field. The book first introduces the reader to the language and concepts used in this field and then demonstrates how these concepts are applied. Including how the spectra are produced, factors that can influence the spectra (all initial and final state effects are discussed), how to derive speciation, volume analysed and how one controls this (includes depth profiling), and quantification along with background substraction and curve fitting methodologies.

This is presented in a concise yet comprehensive manner and each section is prepared such that they can be read independently of each other, and all equations are presented using the most commonly used units. Greater emphasis has been placed on spectral understanding/interpretation. For completeness sake, a description of commonly used instrumentation is also presented. Finally, some complementary surface analytical techniques and associated concepts are reviewed for comparative purposes in stand-alone appendix sections. [264 Pages, Hardcover]

This is the second edition of this market leading text book. The text and digital package is engineered to cater for the content needs of the first year chemistry course as it is generally taught at universities.

The success of the 1st edition has been attributed to the student friendly and engaging writing style, the relevance to real life, and the clear worked examples; which all help demystify chemistry for the 1st year student. In addition to this, our online teaching and learning system, WileyPLUS which is fully integrated with the text, provides lecturers and students with an equitable multimedia platform to enhance their teaching and learning.

Following its success, the first edition was rigorously reviewed, and enhancements made to both the text and the digital resources. The 2nd edition has been enriched in both the text (by addition of new Main Groups chapter and other minor improvements). [Softcover]

Its breadth and scope ensures the highest likelihood of matching an unknown compound. Containing the complete de-duplicated Wiley Registry 9th Edition and NIST/EPA/NIH 2011 combined library and the complete NIST/EPA/NIH 2011 library and software installation, the Wiley Registry 9th Edition/NIST 2011 is the recommended foundation library for any analytical laboratory.

The Wiley Registry 9th Edition/NIST 2011 contains over 800,000 mass spectra collected by Dr. Fred McLafferty and the NIST Mass Spectrometry Data Center. Over 50 percent larger than the Wiley Registry 8th Edition/NIST 2008, this new edition contains over 680,000 unique compounds, making it the most comprehensive combined mass spectral library offered. Replicate spectra ensure a higher rate of matching, and 770,000 searchable chemical structures, 790,000 chemical formulas and exact masses, and over 3 million chemical names and synonyms ensure that the Wiley Registry 9th Edition/NIST 2011 can aid in classical EI, exact mass, and other methods of identification. [Digital/Multimedia]

This book focuses mainly on three experimental approaches: single-molecule fluorescence based mainly on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and diffracted X-ray tracking (DXT), and their applications to important biological phenomena. In addition, discussion is provided on the theoretical progress in the single-molecule data analyses. For students and professionals in chemical physics and physical chemistry from academia, government, and industries. [512 Pages, Hardcover]

2nd Edition Expanded by 64%
Essential oils are mixtures consisting of monoterpene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, their oxygenated derivatives, and aliphatic oxygenated compounds. The difficulties that arise in the GC-MS peak identification of these complex samples is due to the fact that many terpenes have identical mass spectra. This is a consequence of similarities both in the initial molecule, or in the fragmentation patterns and rearrangements after ionization. Hence, MS identification of these compounds should always be accompanied by retention time information that may support the MS library search results.

This innovative MS library for natural and synthetic products (essential oils, perfumes, etc.) makes the identification of unknown compounds in complex mixtures easier, faster and more reliable.

The use of chromatographic information, such as Linear Retention Index (LRI), can be used to filter MS results, enabling the more reliable peak assignment of components in complex mixtures.

Mass spectra, relative to standard and well-known simple matrix components, were obtained and recorded through GC-MS separation/identification. Furthermore, traditional information relative to each component (CAS number, common name, CAS name, molecular weight, compound formula, chemical class) plus linear retention index values are entered.

Flavors and Fragrances of Natural and Synthetic Compounds, 2nd edition contains 3000 mass spectra, LRI retention data, calculated Kovats RI, and searchable chemical structures of compounds of interest for the flavors and fragrances industry. Prepared by the Prof. Luigi Mondello under rigorous measurement conditions, the mass spectral library contains compounds central to flavor and fragrance research. [Digital/Multimedia]

In addition, this textbook teaches the fundamentals of all the major analytical techniques used in the pharmaceutical laboratory, and teaches the international pharmacopoeias and guidelines of importance for the field. It is primarily intended for the pharmacy student, to teach the requirements in analytical chemistry for the 5 years pharmacy curriculum, but the textbook is also intended for analytical chemists moving into the field of pharmaceutical analysis.
* Addresses the basic concepts, then establishes the foundations for the common analytical methods that are currently used in the quantitative and qualitative chemical analysis of pharmaceutical drugs
* Provides an understanding of common analytical techniques used in all areas of pharmaceutical development
* Suitable for a foundation course in chemical and pharmaceutical sciences

Fragments of Fullerenes and Carbon Nanotubes

Written by internationally recognized chemists, this book is the first of its kind to reflect upon the intense and rapidly growing interest in buckybowls, or fullerene fragments, specifically focusing on their synthesis and reactivity in metal binding reactions. The book broadly covers all aspects related to the fullerene fragment chemistry: current synthetic techniques, description of the available members of this new family, molecular geometry and trends in the solid-state packing, as well as extensions into physical properties and new buckybowl-based molecules and materials. This as-of-yet unresolved technology holds the key to developing ultra-thin, carbon-rich materials as components in molecular-scale electrical circuits. [432 Pages, Hardcover]
