Fault-tolerant control theory is a well-studied topic but the use of sets in detection, isolation and/or reconfiguration is rather tangential. The authors of this book propose a systematic analysis of the set theoretic elements and devise approaches which exploit advanced elements within the field. The main idea is to translate fault detection and isolation conditions as conditions involving sets. Furthermore, these are computed efficiently using the notions of reachability and invariance. Loop-shaping Robust Control

The technique of loop-shaping consists of obtaining a specification about the open-loop response of the control law, on the basis of specifications about different closed-loop transfers, because it is easier to work on a single transfer (the open-loop transfer) than on a multitude of transfers (the different loops: reference/error, disturbance/error, disturbance/control signal, etc.). The simplicity and flexibility of the approach make it very useful in the context of industry. This book gives an introduction to the loop-shaping approach - and in particular the declination of high-level specifications toward a loop-shaping specification - before going on to show how it is possible to fully integrate this approach for the calculus of robust and performant controllers using pre-existing techniques already proven in industry, such as H& #8734; synthesis. Loop-shaping H& #8734; synthesis is simply the obtaining of a controller stabilizing a coprime factor plant description, where the plant in question is intended to be a model of the desired open-loop. The combination of this technique with the notion of gap metric (or distance between two models) enables us to stabilize a whole ball of plants, which proves particularly advantageous for taking account of industrial constraints manufactururing dispersions, parametric dispersions due to environment, etc.). The extension of the technique to 2-degrees-of-freedom controllers enables us to take account of additional specifications relating to reference tracking or measurable disturance rejection. Finally, the growing desire to implement servo-loops at a lower cost but with increasingly good performances means it is important to optimize this synthesis technique: optimization of the order of the controllers for the use of increasing numbers of sensors with less and less expensive computers, and optimization of the time developing of servo-loops by optimization of the choice of weighting functions of the synthesis. Since the middle of the 20th Century yield design approaches have been identified with the lower and upper bound theorem of limit analysis theory - a theory associated with perfect plasticity. This theory is very restrictive regarding the applicability of yield design approaches, which have been used for centuries for the stability of civil engineering structures. This book presents a theory of yield design within the original equilibrium/resistance framework rather than referring to the theories of plasticity or limit analysis; expressing the compatibility between the equilibrium of the considered structure and the resistance of its constituent material through simple mathematical arguments of duality and convex analysis results in a general formulation, which encompasses the many aspects of its implementation to various stability analysis problems. After a historic outline and an introductory example, the general theory is developed for the three-dimensional continuum model in a versatile form based upon simple arguments from the mathematical theory of convexity. It is then straightforwardly transposed to the one-dimensional curvilinear continuum, for the yield design analysis of beams, and the two-dimensional continuum model of plates and thin slabs subjected to bending. Field and laboratory observations of the collapse of mechanical systems are presented along with the defining concept of the multi-parameter loading mode.
