Weinheim, April 2005

Dear Author,

Thank you for opening this e-mail letter, with which I want to keep our authors regularly informed about Wiley-VCH and more.

And secondly thank you for all your pleasant and helpful feedback to the last letter, which is available online for those of you who did not have time to open it at: http://www.wiley-vch.de/newsletter/author0105.html.

Copy editing and production - with a passion for publishing

Once a manuscript is (almost) complete, the team shown below takes care of your titles. Copy editing and production is organized and coordinated by a team made up of highly qualified production managers and scientists (biologists, chemists, ...). Do you want to see them in person - here is a snapshot:

Second row: Axel Eberhard (production director), Melanie Rohn (chemist), Brigitte Gutfleisch (production assistant), Uschi Schling-Brodersen (chemist), Peter Biel (production manager)

Not in the picture: Martina Liebetrau (assistant), Romy Kirsten (chemist), Claudia Grössl (production manager).

And even more are working with our books, especially with the electronic dissemination of online books and databases. For more information, please see our next newsletter.

"Form follows function" - More and more books go online

Our selection of online books now comprises more than 1,250 titles. It is uploaded continuously and at present everybody can pick and choose 24 hours/7 days around the globe among more than 19,500 chapters and order them by credit card payment. Since January we have been offering a new selection model for libraries, which has received very good feedback. The online book experiment is now entering in its fourth year - time for a look at the online favorites of Wiley-VCH titles in 2004:

Wiley-VCH Top Ten online titles 2004:

 1. Eicher, Theophil/Hauptmann, Siegfried: The Chemistry of Heterocycles
 2. Wang, Zhong Lin (ed.): Characterization of Nanophase Materials
 3. Raabe, Dierk: Computational Materials Science
 4. Bubert, Henning/Jenett, Holger (eds.): Surface and Thin Film Analysis
 5. Bittner, Christian/Busemann, Anke S./Griesbach, Ulrich/Haunert, Frank/Krahnert, Wolf-Rüdiger/Modi, Andrea/Olschimke, Jens/Steck, Peter L.: Organic Synthesis Workbook II
 6. Caruso, Frank (ed.): Colloids and Colloid Assemblies
 7. Valeur, Bernard: Molecular Fluorescence
 8. Krauss, Gerhard/Cooper, Bonnie L./Schönbrunner, Nancy: Biochemistry of Signal Transduction and Regulation
 9. Kauppinen, Jyrki/Partanen, Jari: Fourier Transforms in Spectroscopy
10. Molema, Grietje/Meijer, Dirk K. F. (eds.): Drug Targeting

By the way, the electronic use of book chapters in Wiley Online Library has now reached the same level as that of our journal chapters - and Google finds them!

"Listen out for the mailman" - Benefits for you

As in the Olympics, the authors of the top three online titles will soon receive a nice keepsake. But all of you can benefit from this bestseller list, since we're offering an additional 5% on top of your author's discount for a limited period on all print editions of the titles listed.

Wiley-VCH books have become a bestselling part of the John Wiley & Sons program throughout the world. As in our last letter, I'd like to draw your attention to some titles from other programs, which we are also offering at an additional 5 % author's discount (for a limited period since your author's discount normally only covers titles from the company you publish with):

* Ascheron, C./ Kickuth, A.: Make Your Mark in Science, ISBN 0-471-65733-6
* Considine, G. D. (ed.): Van Nostrand's Encyclopedia of Chemistry, ISBN 0-471-61525-0
* Greenspan, N. T.: The End of the Certain World, ISBN 0-470-85663-7
* Heller, S.: Freud A to Z, ISBN 0-471-46868-1

"A Reference for the Rest of Us"

In addition, I'd like to draw your attention to the "...for Dummies" series: Since April of this year, the Dummies books are not only being edited and distributed from Indianapolis (where they originated) and London/Chichester, but also from Wiley-VCH in Germany. Below you can see a snapshot from a recent planning meeting in Weinheim:

This team gave birth to new ideas for the next publishing program.

The "...for Dummies" series in German can be found at http://www.dummies.wiley-vch.de

Since we are all experts, but dummies, too, here is a selection you might like to choose from:

* Shiels, M. P. / Kernicki, M.: Golf's Short Game For Dummies, ISBN 0-7645-6920-1
* Schlosberg, S. / Neporent, L.: Fitness For Dummies, ISBN 0-7645-7851-0
* Wagner, R. / Mansfield, R.: XML All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies, ISBN 0-7645-1653-1
* Levine, J. R. / Levine Young, M. / Everett-Church, R.: Fighting Spam For Dummies, ISBN 0-7645-5965-6

Last but not least ...

I'd like to close this letter with some snapshots from two of our many events over this last springtime.
