Weinheim, February 2006

Dear Author,

"All the world's a stage." (William Shakespeare, 1564 - 1616). In these days of easy e-communication this is truer than ever.

Who puts you in the spotlight at Wiley-VCH? There are many, many colleagues around the world who are closely networked via telephone and videoconferences and once or twice a year through face-to-face meetings, such as the Asian sales conference held last autumn in Hanoi. Have a look at the picture: Almost 200 colleagues (among them Peter Wiley, Chairman of the Board) exchanged experiences on how best to promote and sell all of your products and brands.

A passion for book & reference marketing: Act local, think global

The picture shows you Wiley-VCH's core book marketing team, taken in the foyer in Weinheim.

First row (left to right): Sabine Bischoff (Group Marketing Manager Books), Ulrich Stephan (Marketing Manager Libraries), Dr. Prisca Henheik (Chemist & Life Scientist, Marketing Manager Data Collections and Reference Works), Ursula Schneider (Marketing Executive). Insert: Dagmar Stehle (Marketing & Sales Director STM).
Second row: Ute Schnebel (Review and Publicity Executive), Monika Knabe (Marketing Executive), Tina Morweiser (Personal Assistant to Dagmar Stehle, Marketing Executive Wiley Online Library)

There are many more colleagues active in marketing & sales, who "feed" Amazon, the bookshops, organize exhibitions, and... Keep an eye on the next author letters.

Keep a look out also at conferences where you will also meet them:

Research & Ethics

This has been a hot topic ever since research has been carried out. Sometimes I wonder whether more awareness, more background information, more about dos and don'ts shouldn't be part of our students' education right from the very beginning.

Here is some literature from our program:

Beach, Dore
The Responsible Conduct of Research
(only available online)
  Djerassi, Carl / Hoffmann, Roald
Oxygen
A Play in 2 Acts
  Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) (ed.)
Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice / Vorschläge zur Sicherung Guter Wissenschaftlicher Praxis
Recommendations of the Commission on Professional Self Regulation in Science

Zankl, Heinrich
Fälscher, Schwindler, Scharlatane
Betrug in Forschung und Wissenschaft
  Zankl, Heinrich
Nobelpreise: Brisante Affairen, umstrittene Entscheidungen

Ethical Guidelines by the Publications Division of the ACS could be found here.
Other societies like the German Physical Society (DPG) have similar guidelines - look out and support them as we do in our editorial offices.

And...

not too far removed from this topic are two new books that reflect upon our future and what scientists can do - where we should be on the world's stage.
