Weinheim, February 2007

Dear Authors and Editors,

You're reading the seventh issue of my letters to you - please see the archive for previous ones at http://www.wiley-vch.de/newsletter/author.html.

I do hope you all had a successful start to 2007. At least one of our authors had an extremely good start: Firstly, Fraser Stoddart (UCLA) was knighted by the Queen and immediately thereafter we learned that he will receive the King Faisal Award. Hopefully I'll be hearing much more good news from many of you.

Join us to celebrate 200 years of John Wiley & Sons

At Wiley-VCH, the 9th of January was a very special day: At Wiley locations around the globe we started celebrating the bicentenary of John Wiley & Sons!

"Since our founding, Wiley has championed early American literature, produced textbooks that helped define fields of study, and published bestsellers and the works of Nobel Laureates. We have been an integral part of every generation's journey, a valued source of information to help them meet their needs and fulfill their aspirations," said Peter Booth Wiley, Chairman of the Board, and one of the sixth generation of the Wiley family to be involved with the Company.

"As we celebrate our bicentennial, we look forward to collaborating with our authors, partners, shareholders, and colleagues to write the next chapter in Wiley's remarkable history. Together, we will make a lasting difference in the lives of the people we serve." said William J. Pesce, President and Chief Executive Officer, who is the 10th president in Wiley's history.

If you want to know more, please have a look at editorials and reviews about science & more around 1807 and today in our journals, such as Angewandte Chemie and Biotechnology Journal as well as for instance physica status solidi.

Please order by February 28, 2006 at http://www.wiley-vch.de/templates/forms/nla0702.php.

But please do bear in mind that bestseller lists as well as the lists of most accessed titles are by no means the sole criteria to measure success and especially relevance - they are simply the easiest way to measure, like impact factors. Reprints, follow-ups and new expanded editions are other proofs of success and we are continuously doing many of these for lots of your books. Some recent record-breakers are Wolf "Nanophysics and Nanotechnology", Koch/Holthausen "A Chemist's Guide to Density Functional Theory", Christensen/Fosbury, "Hubble", and several of John Emsley's titles.

What is my ISBN now?

Never before have there been more scientists working with wonderfully architectured instruments, creating more scientific information than ever. Never ever could more people on earth write and read. No wonder then that the 10-digit ISBN system - the unique identifier of every book - had reached its limits: From January 2007 on it will have 13 digits instead of 10 to keep pace with the growth. Every ISBN now has a new prefix (978-) and a new calculated check digit at the end. So, the previous ISBN 3-527-30509-2 is now 978-3-527-30509-4, for example http://www.wiley-vch.de/publish/en/books/ISBN978-3-527-30509-4/. You don' t have to worry about the ISBN of your own book(s) - we have already transferred all the ISBNs into the new system.

All e-books do have their own ISBN!

If you want to convert single ISBNs by yourself, please visit http://www.isbn.org/converterpub.asp. More information can also be found at http://www.isbn-international.org/converter/converter.html?lang=en.

Come and see us ...

and make use of your author's discount. Like every year, you'll see our new titles at spring conferences such as:

Again, this is only a very brief list, more dates can be found at http://www.wiley-vch.de/publish/en/service/convention/ - and don't forget your author's discount when you buy our books at conferences.

Last but not least ...

On February 5th, 2007, John Wiley & Sons announced that it had finalized the acquisition of the outstanding shares of Blackwell Publishing, one of the world's foremost academic and professional publishers. With this news I would like to end this letter.

Thank you for your precious time and please contact me if things go wrong, if you're thinking about publishing, etc. Let me close with some snapshots from our recent Wiley-VCH New Year's concert with Akiko Inagawa.
