Weinheim, August 2008

Dear Authors and Editors,

It's summer time in Germany and I hope that this e-letter reaches you in good spirits. By the way: This letter goes currently to more than 9,000 Wiley-VCH book (co-)authors and editors in 70 countries all over the world. While it has been a while since you received the last one, some of us have seen each other face to face: at conferences, exhibitions, receptions, lectures - be it in the Americas, Europe or Asia or in the train from Weinheim to Switzerland, from Berlin to Frankfurt...

This snapshot was taken at our reception at the ACS meeting in New Orleans seeing the launch of ChemSusChem, 120 years of Angewandte Chemie and the signing of "Molecules that Changed the World" (Dan Nocera, MIT, Peter Gölitz, editor-in-chief Angewandte Chemie, and Bruce Bursten, Tennessee (ACS president)).

Congratulations! Like the Olympics winners, the authors/editors of the first three will receive something as a memento of their success.

Books continue to go e: our collection now embraces more than 6,000 titles online, plus many references as well as textbooks like Halliday, Solomons, and Devlin. Also coming soon is the German edition of Peter Vollhardt's Organic Chemistry. They are all on WileyPLUS, which is helping teachers teach and students learn.

The other side of the coin is that piracy has become a joint challenge for us! If you happen to see your book cloned, please let us know.

Award Winners

Congratulations also to the spring award winning authors like

Future

What is "ante portas"? Simply: a lot across all the disciplines we serve. Some highlights:
  • At the ACS meeting in Philadelphia we will see our authors Dieter Enders and Mukund P. Sibi receive the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award

  • At the 2nd EuCheMS meeting in Turin K. C. Nicolaou will receive the August-Wilhelm-Hofmann-Award and you can get your signed copy of "Molecules that Changed the World" at your authors' discount.

  • The presentation of our largest and heaviest book – a truly global enterprise which clearly marks a record: The photographer of this project, Peter Badge, is German and has travelled the world since 2000 to take pictures of more than 300 living Nobel laureates. The biographies were written by Chris Richmond from Oxford and the book was produced in China. The epilogue is written by the world famous movie director and photographer, Wim Wenders. Supported by the Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings (special thanks to Nikolaus Turner from the Kester-Haeusler Foundation), Wiley-VCH has published this heavy "coffee table book" (weighing 8 kg, measuring 33 cm x 33 cm). The advance copies look great – a really wonderful gift for yourself, but also a presentable gift for many occasions. Please think of your authors' discount!

Nikolaus Turner, Dagmar Stehle, Peter Badge

  • We also publish true innovations which are much smaller: Our recent lightest publication weighs only 53 grams: "The Protein Chart" - the "Periodic Table" of proteins. "The ideal tool to understand and teach the principles of protein structure." (R. Huber, Nobel laureate 1988)

Special Invitations

  • If you happen to be visiting the EuCheMS meeting in Turin: we would like to welcome you at our reception on Wednesday afternoon (17 September 2008, 17:30 - 19:30 at the Lingotto conference center) which is organized jointly with the German Chemical Society (GDCh).
  • If you happen to be close to Frankfurt during the world's largest book fair in October (14 - 19 October 2008), you are cordially invited to visit the Wiley stand (hall 8, N922) and at the end of the day to relax with drinks and finger food on Thursday, 16 October 2008 at 16.30. As tickets are needed, please contact us in advance.
