Rapidshare
Wiley-VCH issued a temporary injunction against the 1-click hosting service Rapidshare with regard to 16 book titles from our current range of publications. These books were repeatedly made available online from this Internet service without our permission.
Are library users allowed to copy scanned works?
In accordance with the new Section 52 b of the Copyright Law (UrhG) libraries may make their books available to users via electronic terminals. But are they also allowed to equip these terminals in such a way that copyrighted works are not only displayed but can also be printed out or transferred onto a USB stick? Darmstadt State and University Library (ULB) offered digitalized books at its terminals. These could not only be displayed on the terminals, but could also be printed out and transferred in their entirety onto USB sticks to be taken away outside of the library. With the patronage of the German Publishers and Booksellers Association, accelerated proceedings were instigated for a legal investigation of the activities in Darmstadt. The Frankfurt am Main district court admitted the claim brought against the ULB Darmstadt in one aspect of great importance to publishers and authors: The ULB's allowing of digital copies to be made of electronic books is against the law. Downloading onto USB sticks in particular has to be prevented in future. Together with the publishers, the German Publishers and Booksellers Association intends to discuss with the libraries how to draw up a reasonable legal framework for digital content.

Social Media
- Twitter
Have you seen our general Life Sciences pages on Twitter? You can find information such as "New Book Out Today," "New Journal Article Posts," or links to authors' websites, articles in your subject area, programs that may be airing on television or on the Web, as well as articles that have generated publicity for the company. On Twitter you will also find our Current Protocols, the largest collection available of peer-reviewed, authoritative, and regularly updated step-by-step research techniques and procedures. With over 15 titles and 11,500 high-quality protocols, Current Protocols is the leading source of its kind for life scientists worldwide.
A Twitter site for Wiley Chemistry is also available. This collates information from e-mails, websites and other online activity, such as the Facebook site and the Go Green website, into tweets (the short update communications that take place within the Twitter environment). The Twitter site only recently launched, has already 700 followers. This is also part of the Wiley Web 2.0 initiatives to make sure that information on books, journals, authors and events is as widely available as possible.
Wiley-VCH is equally "twittering" on products, services, special offers, job openings, events, new websites, ... (mostly in German).
- Facebook
The marketing team at Wiley and Wiley-VCH established a Facebook page, called Chemistry by Wiley with the aim of providing a wider range of information about publications, events and authors than can normally be accessed in one place through our websites. This is a recent innovation to use Facebook to extend our reach into both Web 2.0 and to contact younger researchers and students. The page currently has around 200 fans from countries as diverse as the United States, the UK, Iran, Spain and Australia. Content on the site is regularly updated with details of new titles, key developments, conferences and exhibitions, author events, awards, journal hot topics and general Wiley chemistry news. The site also features links to all our chemistry, biochemistry and materials online catalogues and to other specialist web pages, such as Go Green that focuses on green chemistry. Fans of the site are also able to access free trials and free content.
Cover of the Year competition 2008
This year has also seen a contest to decide the best-designed cover. And we would like to thank everyone who took part. The following titles not only convinced readers by way of their contents but also with their outward appearance:

1. Heschl - Darwins Traum
"[...] Heschl wants as many people as possible to share the insights into the theory of evolution by using examples from his field of research to illustrate evolutionary principles [...] - a didactically excellent and at the same time entertaining discourse on the wonder of life and how it was created [...]." (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, February 2009)
|

2. Christensen - Hidden Universe
"[This] story of how different telescopes have peeled away layers of the "cosmic onion" offers a useful counterpoint to the history of the telescopes." (Physics World, March 2009)
|

3. Atkins / de Paula - Kurzlehrbuch Physikalische Chemie
"[...] This has the positive effect that you are not immediately scared off by such complex sounding terms as 'entropy' or 'quantum theory' and you approach the material with renewed interest, rather than having to fight through the text […] All in all, I whole-heatedly recommend this text book [...]" (uni.online.de, April 2009)

Who supplies the ideas for the covers?
-- Usually the suggestions come from the editor responsible for briefing the graphic designer. But sometimes the authors have a certain idea of what should be on the front cover.
What does a production manager consider to be a good cover?
-- A good cover is characterized by the fact that it is an eye-catcher. Since a lot of things are conveyed visually these days, this has to be a cover's important feature. It needs to stand out and attract the customer.
What is so special about our blue and white covers?
-- Our blue and white branding is an established trademark among booksellers and thus is easily recognized by our customers. This means that our books are instantly identified in bookstores as Wiley-VCH publications. The customer associates this with a high degree of quality in terms of the design, production and contents.
59th Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates focusing this year on chemistry
The Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates has become an institution. For the first time, the patron of this year's event was Countess Bettina Bernadotte, following the death of Countess Sonja Bernadotte last year. 23 laureates were in attendance, discussing current topics from the world of chemistry with 600 selected students and post docs from 67 nations. Two of the most lively debated subjects were sustainability and environmental compatibility. The three current Nobel prizewinners in chemistry (Chalfie, Shimomura, Tsien) also came to the beautiful Lindau island. Rita Levi-Montalcini's attendance (1986 Nobel prize for medicine) was particularly impressive, as she celebrates her 100th birthday this year.
If you want to know more about Nobel laureates (up to 2007), take a look at Peter Badge's book: Nobel Faces.

Astronomy/Astrophysics
The General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) was the most important scientific meeting in astronomy and astrophysics during the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA09), also receiving broad coverage in the mass media. The IAU chose to hold this event in the fascinating city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - a decision that gave scientists and students in Latin America better access to cutting-edge research and to more than 2,000 scientists from all over the world.
There was also much interest in the books and journals published by Wiley-Blackwell, including the IAU flagship book for this special year. In the picture author Lars Christensen is examining Wiley's presence at the event.
