Dipyrene- and dianthracene-appended resorcin[4]arene cavitands undergo acid- or temperature-induced vase-kite switching and form remarkably stable complexes with suitably sized cycloalkanes. ¹H NMR spectroscopic investigations of intramolecular π-π stacking and fluorescence studies of excimer formation reveal a surprising conformational flexibility, which was further supported by molecular dynamics simulations.
