For numerous geotechnical applications soil dynamics are of special importance. In seismic engineering this affects the stability of dams, slopes, foundations, retaining walls and tunnels, while vibrations due to traffic and construction equipment represent a significant aspect in environmental protection. Foundations for mechanical equipment and cyclically loaded offshore structures are also part of the spectrum of application. This book covers the basics of soil dynamics and building thereon the practical applications in vibration protection and seismic engineering.

Dr. Christos Vrettos is Professor of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern in Germany. He holds a Dipl.-Ing. and a Dr.-lng degree from the University of Karlsruhe and a Habilitation from the Technical University of Berlin. He spent several years in construction industry and geotechnical consulting being involved in notable projects. His expertise covers soil dynamics, railroad track dynamics, geotechnical earthquake engineering, numerical methods in geomechanics, deep foundations, unsaturated soils, and deep excavations. He is member of various international and national committees, and author of numerous publications.
