Short Description
A stock index is a compilation of many stocks such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average or the Standard & Poor's 500. These broader indexes can be very profitable to trade. However, individual investors and smaller traders have traditionally been left out of these markets due to the expense of just one contract (which can be as high as $100,000). In 1997, the exchanges, recognizing that a market existed for a smaller version of these indexes, created the E-mini S&P 500 and the Dow. Now smaller traders can trade futures and options on the most popular broad markets.
