ISNI (International Standard Name Identifier)
- What is an ISNI?
The ISNI (International Standard Name Identifier) is a globally unique identifier for authors and other creative professionals. It serves to clearly assign authors to their works. - Who manages the ISNI?
The ISNI is managed centrally on a global basis. Further information can be found on the official website: https://isni.org/. - Why is the ISNI important?
The ISNI enables the unique identification of authors, which is particularly relevant for the exploitation of rights and the discoverability of works. It is increasingly being used in various systems and processes. - Will the ISNI become mandatory?
Yes, the ISNI will become mandatory in the Directory of Available Books (VLB) from the end of 2025. VG Wort will also use ISNI for the distribution of royalties in the future. - What does this mean for me as an author?
Applying for and using an ISNI is in your own interest, as it is a prerequisite for royalty distribution and listing in the VLB. - What is Wiley-VCH doing in this regard?
Wiley-VCH will determine the corresponding ISNI for all works already published by its own publishing house or, if not yet available, apply for one. This ensures that the interests of the authors are protected. When new contracts are concluded, authors are asked to check for themselves whether an ISNI already exists and, if necessary, to apply for one independently and communicate it. - How can I check whether I already have an ISNI or apply for one?
You can check whether you are already registered on the website https://isni.org, where you can also apply for an ISNI. Further information on registration in the VLB can also be found there or via the relevant publisher contacts.
